Border's Melbobourne Central

Shit it's a long time since I last blogged. But I never said I'd be doing it every week.

I was at Borders in Melbourne Central today to buy my partner a birthday present, for it is tomorrow.

The dude says: "Do you want a bag for that?" (This is after he wanted me to sign up to their email newsletter. Like fuck I do. I get enough shit in the in box that I don't read now, so I don't need any more, twatter.)

I said yes, and then the spiel came. "It's $3.50 for a re-usable calico bag (is there another type?), or 10 cents for a plastic one".

I paused for a minute. There's no way I'm going to be seen with a fucking hippy calico bag. I may as well grow a beard, wear Birkenstocks and fuck pigeons becasue that's how popular I'll be sporting that number.

I'm all for saving the environment, and 10 cents did seem a lot to pay for a small plastic bag. I can imagine there would be a lot of professional worriers and cappuccino revolutionists who would say "10 cents is too much to pay for a plastic bag, and I want a nice world and a hug and a full sense of my own self satisfaction, so I won't pay that." So they stump up for the $3.50 or they carry their purchase.

I can understand this. And I get shitty that they offered it to me in the first place. If you want people to stop the use of plastic bags, don't offer them. It probably costs them about $10 - $20 for a box of 2500 bags as they would be ordering a lot at one time, so if they charge 10 cents, they are making some money. And the cost is meant to be a deterrent to buying. Surely if they were serious about saving the environemnt, they wouldn't contract out to get bags made in the first place.

Anyway, I paid for one, as I wasn't going to carry the books all the way back here. Arseholes. If the options were the numb-nut calico bag or nothing, I would have taken nothing and carried them. So I blame you Border's Melbourne Central for me having a plastic bag, and ultimately destroyign the planet. I hope you sleep well tonight.
